My father, Ken Melendres, built a home in Costa Rica in 2007. One morning, a few years later, he sat down at the breakfast table and explained to me that he had a dream about his home becoming a place of healing and restoration. He wanted to reach out to the poor and youth in the surrounding areas. I was thrilled to hear this and we immediately contacted our Costa Rican friends to share the news.
However, our project came to a screeching halt when only one month later he diagnosed with stage-four brain cancer. We pulled together as a family and did all we could to support him in this fight but sadly he went home 4 ½ later…
It has been two years now and even though I lost my father, his legacy and dream lives on. A small team and I are working with Iris Global, a California based non-profit, to set up this home as beginning of a base to rescue children out of human trafficking.
